KING TIGER AUSF. B, HENSCHEL  TURRET

INTRODUCTION .  BRIEF HISTORY

The Henschel project for the Tiger II (King Tiger) was completed in October 1943. It was determined that it was not possible to mount the 88mm anti-aircraft flak (41 L / 73) from Rheinmetall-Borsing, which was intended to have much more reach than the 88mm of the Tiger I. The Krupp company was asked to make the turret, with porsche design, to which he added his own version of an 88mm gun, designation KwK 36 and KwK 43 / L71 and that it should fit perfectly in the Henschel and Porsche chassis. Later Henschel would perform a variation of this turret, which also would be produced by Krupp. This gun barrel successfully penetrated 21 cm of armor at 1 km distance and at an inclination of 30 degrees. At 100 meters penetrated even 33 cm inches of metal. Its special ammunition reached a speed of 1.17 km per second, 183 meters faster than the Tiger's 88mm cannon. Later, these cars used the Henschel design turret entirely, more efficient, easier and cheaper to produce than the one designed by Porsche. The tank was similar to the Panther and had the same P30 Maybach HL 230 engine, the transmission was a Maybach OLVAR EG 8-speed and the gearbox was 12 changes, although a thicker shield to lower power / weight ratio , with the loss of speed and mobility.

The Panzerkampfwagen VI Sd.Kfz 182 or 'King Tiger' was placed in service in early 1944. He served on the western front and on the eastern front, notably participated in the Battle of Normandy, in the operation "Market Garden" in Holland , and in the offensive of the Ardennes. In the last days of April and beginning of May of 1945, they participated in the campaign of East Prussia, the offensive around the Ruhr, the combats by the Seelow Hills and the last 13 Tiger II produced by Henschel were received by the 3rd Companies of the battalions 510 and 511, in the street fight for the ruins of the capital during the Battle of Berlin where 25 King Tiger destroyed 256 Soviet Tanks.
