Manuscript Cancels From Mexico - 19th Century

Traditionally the Mexican stamp Issues of 19th Century had a great variety of Postmarks, many
of them were considered beautiful. The most were applied using a manufactured Device.
However, some cancellations were used using a simple pen; were used two types of pen
cancels called: 1) Manuscript and 2) with lines or cross.

The book of Howard Frome "The Manuscript Markings of Mexico 1856-1878" , mentioned 344
pen markins found on the Mexican stamps. At least 80 Post Offices used Manuscript Cancels
and 71 Offices used pen Cancels.

The best example of the Manuscript Cancels for the lack of a Canceling Device was the
Sub-Office San José Yturbide, Main District Queretaro, now these stamps are very difficult to
obtain and rare, the market value is USD$220-260.00 on Maximilian Stamps! (I have 43 years
as Philatelist and I have seen only 3 Yturbide Manuscript Stamps <one in my Collection>).
They were used only during the French Empire, 1864-1866 with Imperial Eagles and
1866-1867 Maximilian Issues.

Other Manuscript Cancels were used in "Salinas del Peñon Blanco" (S.L.Potosi), "Ejutla"
(Oaxaca), "Sayula, Zapotlan" (Guadalajara, Zacatecas, etc.,

The Manuscript Cancellations can be found in three formats:

1.- The Town name only
2.- "Franco En" + the Town Name with or without date
3.- Town Name with date only
