JAGDTIGER EARLY / LATE PRODUCTION

   Jagdtiger Early/Late

The Sd. Kfz. 186 Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B Jagdtiger (Hunting Tiger), was a tank destroyer of World War II, based on the chassis of the Königstiger. In addition, it was the heaviest armored vehicle ever to be mass-produced during the war. The idea of the Jagdtiger began in early 1943 and the prototypes were manufactured by Porsche and Henschel, the main difference between them was that the porsche suspension had 8 interleaved wheels and the later versions, manufactured by Henschel, had 9 wheels. The vehicle was armed with a 128mm PaK 44 L / 55 gun. It lacked a turret, and the barrel could only turn transversely about ten degrees: the vehicle had to turn on itself to be able to aim at anything else outside its firing range. It suffered from the same problems as the Tiger II tank: an underpowered engine, frequent mechanical breaks, and poor maneuverability. These defects made it vulnerable to infantry with anti-tank weapons and to allied air attacks. When he had the right support, the Jagdtiger was an exceptional opponent, especially at long distances.
